About Us About

Tamil Literature Society

Tamil Literature Society (hereinafter TLS) was established in the year 1948 at Tuticorin – a coastal diocese in the State of Tamil Nadu in India. The then Bishop of Tuticorin Most Rev. F.T.Roche was the first President and Rev.Fr.Xavier S. Thaninayagam of Tuticorin Diocese was the first Secretary. The main aim of the TLS was to promote Catholic literature in the local dialect so that the people will understand and internalize the essence of catholic faith. Taking cognizance of the dire need of the above aim, the TLS was patronized by the Catholic Bishops of Tamil Nadu. Besides, Bishops of various dioceses have delegated their representatives as the official members of the governing body of TLS. At present Most Rev. Peter Remigius, Emeitus Bishop of Kottar is the President of TLS Trust.

In the earlier days the Holy Mass and the Bible readings were in Latin language and hence the laity could not absorb the real meaning of prayers in the church. At this juncture, the catholic church in Tamil Nadu decided to translate the Latin into the vernacular language. In 1960 the Bishops of Tamil Nadu decided to establish an expert committee to revise the translation of the New Testament. In this process the TLS played a pivotal role in translating the New Testament. Having felt the precious contribution of TLS in protecting and promoting catholic literature the church decided to shift the TLS from Tuticorin to Trichy in the year 1971 so as to facilitate easy access to the entire State of Tamil Nadu. Most. Rev. Thomas Fernando, the then Bishop of Trichy was the first head of TLS in Trichy. The TLS, with scant financial support not only managed the catholic literary activities but also established its own office in 1980 with minimum facilities. Though the TLS had been supported by the Bishops of various dioceses in Tamil Nadu, its contribution in promoting catholic literature reflects the selfless service of Rev.Fr. Xavier S. Thaninayagam.

Fr. Xavier S. Thaninayagam was a Sri Lankan Catholic Priest, who served the catholic church in Tuticorin Diocese. Being a staunch social apostolate he believed in the liberation of people from the clutches of social ostracism. His natural flair for languages cutting across race and regions had driven him to obtain academic degrees in Tamil language from Universities. His contribution in organizing the first world Tamil Conference was praiseworthy and the entire global Tamil society gratefully acknowledges his initiatives. The catholic literary mantle that Fr. Xavier S. Thaninayagam lit up in the early days glows firmly over the years illuminating his fame.

With the patronage of the Bishops Council of Tamil Nadu the TLS has been vibrantly contributing for the growth of catholic faith and also the Tamil language. Keeping in line with the changes in the contemporary global and national socio-political system the TLS decided to reach out to the society at large through mass media communication. As a starter programme the TLS decided to prepare progressive journalists to spread the information with social values by offering a university approved Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Journalism and Personal Relation in 1992. TLS continues to give Diploma Programme in Journalism and Personal Relations ( PJDJPR) till today.

Milestones

Tamil Literature Society

The Tamil Literature Society ( Registered as TLS Trust in 1994 ) was started in 1948 at Tuticorin by the late Fr. Xavier Thaninayagam with the Vision and objective to promote Tamil Literature in an organized academic atmosphere. Bishop F T Roche, the then Bishop of Tuticorin, was it’s first Pesident and was succeeded by Bishop Thomas Fernando as the Bishop of Tuticorin and as the President of TLS. Shifting the TLS to Tiruchy, the central place of Tamilnadu, was often discussed by the Bishop’s of Tamilnadu in their TNBC meetings and it was finally accomplished in 1971. Bishop Thomas , who had by that time been transferred as the Bishop of Tiruchy, gave a good site to TLS to construct it’s own building facing the main road which is Bharathiyar Salai leading to the Railway Station.

Fr Thaninayagam had collected funds and purchased a large house in Pudu Gramam in Tuticorin to house the TLS, when TLS was shifted to Tiruchy, the house at Tuticorin was sold to the Presentation Sisters who use the building even now to run their Home Science College.

From the proceeds of the sales of the building at Tuticorin, Fr A Michael the then secretary of TLS, constructed the present building at the Survey No.20, near the John Paul II Dialogue centre at 49 J, Bharathiyar Salai, Tiruchy-1.

Ever since it’s foundation the TLS has been an able instrument of dialogue in the field of Literature and Culture. It has been involved in promoting Tamil language and Culture through meetings, seminars and workshops held in various places of Tamilnadu . The “Thembavani Maanaadu” organized in the 1960’s was an eye opener to the Tamil People and convinced them of the incomparable contribution of Fr C J Beshi to Tamil. We have been continuing such ministry of the word all around.
